Family movie night is a favorite of mine, I really look forward to it and love any gadget that can help make movie night perfect. Lucky me, Vizio asked me to review their new Vizio Co-Star and I couldn’t wait to give it a try!
The Vizio Co-Star is a standalone Google TV box that can be easily setup with your TV and a wifi or ethernet connection. It uses Google TV to bring streaming movies, music, entertainment and internet to your TV. It offers a great selection of built-in apps including the popular Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and YouTube. It also comes with a remote that also has a QWERTY keyboard on the back.
The box is nice and compact so it takes up very little room on an entertainment center or wherever you’d like it. It doesn’t need to be in line with the remote so it’s really up to you where you want to put it.
Setting It Up
Setup is pretty straight forward, you can connect it directly to your TV or if you are like us and have a Cable Box you just plug it in with an HDMI cable. An HDMI cable is not included. We luckily had one that we weren’t using so we used that.
After you are plugged in and powered up the Vizio Co-Star will take you through a quick step-by-step setup process where you will create an account and program it for your DVR. We have UVerse and getting it setup with our DVR was very simple.
After your all setup it will open up the home screen. It reminds me a lot of logging into a desktop computer with all your icons for different streaming apps. Navigating to the app you want is easy using the Co-Star’s remote, you can use the arrows or the touch pad. There are lots of choices of installed apps for music, gaming and entertainment.
While the remote is a bit bulky it has a lot of functionality. One is more like a traditional remote with forward, back, record, volume, channels and typical navigation options and of course, the touch-pad. There are also some built-in buttons for quicker access to Amazon Instant Play, Netflix or M-GO. The other side is a full keyboard for web browsing or entering data.
The remote works via Bluetooth so you can put the box anywhere you’d like because it doesn’t need to be in the line of sight.
The picture quality for streaming is quite clear and the streaming is smooth and didn’t chunk or buffer. The apps are all easy to navigate and select a movie, show or clip. It offers easy access to the top streaming providers including Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Pandora. I can even catch up on True Blood with HBO GO 🙂
Great for entertaining the whole family! I watched some Sesame Street videos with Pinky 🙂
The web browsing is good if you want to go to a couple of sites but if you really want to surf around it can become difficult because the keyboard is pretty small and I did run into some issues using the touch-pad trying to click. I wouldn’t recommend doing any heavy surfing on it but to view a few sites here and there its alright.
See It In Action
I’m quite happy with the Vizio Co-Star and have nothing bad to say about it. The picture quality is great, it streams nicely and the interface is very intuitive and easy to use. The Vizio Co-Star box is nice and compact and can be placed anywhere you want, even if you tuck it away in a closet it will work with the Bluetooth remote. The Vizio Co-Star also has a great price, only $99 at Walmart. If your looking for a streaming device the Vizio I would definitely recommend checking this one out.
