The Quality Coat Challenge with Lands’ End, Nautica, LL Bean and Gap

The winters in Michigan are cold, wet and windy and having a nice warm and comfortable coat is important. I was sent 4 winter coats from top brands and asked to put them each to the test. I carefully went over all the details of each coat, how well it was put together, the materials used, comfort and style.

The contenders

Quality Coat Challenge Review with LL Bean, Lands' End, Gap and Nautica

Gap Puffer Jacket Review

Gap Puffer Jacket
MSRP $98
The Gap Puffer jacket is good enough to keep me warm during the fall months and when I just run in and out of the car running errands and whatnot. The microfiber filling isn’t all that warm and it is not a jacket I would wear out in freezing temperatures for any extended period of time. While I like the shorter style of the coat it tends to make my shirt ride up, exsposes my back to the cold and it drives me crazy. The zippers are hard to fasten because the pull doesn’t stay lined up and I fumble trying to get it fastened. Overall, it’s a nice looking coat for cold fall days but not at all good for the winter.

Nautica Puffer Coat with Fur Hood Review

Nautica Puffer Coat With Faux-Fur Hood
MSRP $199.00
The first thing that drew me to the Nautica coat is the style. I love that it is not only very warm but it’s nicely fitted and the color is such a nice Champagne shade that will go nicely with any outfit. It’s quilted with a feather/down fill and it’s nicely distributed throughout the coat with no bulkiness or bulges. I love that this coat has so many pockets and zipper compartments but I do wish they had pockets to put your hands on. I often times forget my gloves and use my pockets to help keep my hands warm but they are in a awkward spot to do that on this coat. The zipper is nice and heavy duty and easy to quickly zip up and head out the door. My favorite feature of the Nautica Puffer Coat is the hood. It’s nicely lined with a warm material and has a stylish fur trim. It stays nicely in place on my head and hits goes over my forehead just a bit to help keep my head warm. I do wish it had wrist cuffs had a warmer lining to help keep the wind out. Other than the pocket location and the cuffs I really love this coat and it’s going to get alot of wear this winter.

Lands End Shimmer Down Parka ReviewLands’ End Women’s Shimmer Down Coat
MSRP $199.50 On Sale for $179.50
This coat had me at the word down. Not only is the Lands’ End Shimmer Coat made of a nice quilted warm down filling, it’s not at all bulky. I love the simple stylish look of this coat and all the nice features it has. The pockets and cuffs are lined with the softest fleece material. It fits very nicely and the pockets are nicely placed for me to put my hands in them to help me stay warm and cozy. The hood is fur trimmed and fits my head nicely and stays on. I do wish the inside of the hood were lined with that same fleece as the pockets and the wrists. The zipper is nice and durable and easy to zip up, plus it is a two-way zipper which allows for more moving room especially when sitting. I love this coat, its so very nice and warm and I love the added fleece comfort features.

LL Bean's Warm and Light Belted Coat ReviewLL Bean’s Warm and Light Belted Coat
MSRP $179
The LL Bean coat is insulated with down and is very nice and warm. I love the deep hood and it keeps my face protected from the wind. The style of the coat isn’t my favorite but it does have a nice belt feature that adds a bit of flair to it. The pockets are lined with a snuggly fleece material and are nicely located where I can easily put my hands in to keep them warm. The lining is a bit thin for my liking but the down insulation is plenty to keep me warm. The zipper on this coat is a double zipper and I have a really hard time getting it zipped up so I wasn’t too happy with that. Overall, I really like this coat I’m just not a big fan of the quilt pattern it has but its really warm outside of the zipper issues.

And the winner is….

The Lands’ End Womens‘ Shimmer Down Coat! I just love this coat! It’s very stylish and so practical at the same time. The pockets and wrist cuffs are very snugly feeling and the hood lays perfectly on my head and also keeps my face protected in the wind. I also love that you can get 2 looks out of the coat by removing the fur trim on the hood. This jacket is warm, fashionable and cozy! The Nautica coat came in a close second and would have been first if it had the fleece lined pockets that I could easily put my hands in and nice lined cuffs.
