Mother’s Day Gift Idea: Acer Chromebook Laptop Review

I’m a member of the eBay Partner Network and was provided a sample from eBay at no charge for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We’ve needed a new laptop for the family to use for a while now. My husbands old one was on it’s last leg and finally bit the dust a few weeks ago. I’d been researching the new Chromebooks because they are much more affordable and had heard good things about them.

20160501_143256The Acer 15.6″ Chromebook Laptop looked like a good fit. It has a 15.6″ screen and a 2GB internal memory (though they are available with more internal memory if you need it.). We don’t really use the laptop for much other than surfing the internet, watching Netflix and my daughter plays games on it from time to time. Some details about it –

Acer Chromebook 15.6″ Laptop with 2GB memory:

Work and Play in Full High Definition
From full-length films to funny video clips, virtually everything you see on this computer’s display renders in crisp, lifelike detail. Its 1080p Full HD resolution is the same as that of many big-screen HDTVs, fitting the same amount of pixels—just more than 2 million—into a smaller space, so even everyday websites appear sharp and realistic. In addition to heightening the impact of streaming shows, video games, and other visual media, Full HD resolution makes photos pop and can help you get a more accurate look at potential online purchases.

Solid-State Drive: Speed and Reliability
The built-in solid-state drive (SSD) performs the same duties of a traditional hard-disk drive, but up to 100 times faster. Unlike hard-disk drives, SSDs don’t rely on moving parts to write, store, and retrieve data; instead, they use flash memory chips that can boot up your computer and launch apps in mere seconds. Without the moving parts, SSDs are also lighter, take up less space within your computer, and are less susceptible to damage and data loss from computer bumps.

Video Chat with Anyone, Anywhere
A built-in webcam can make it feel like people miles away are in the room with you, helping you connect more clearly than with a phone call or email. Collaborate with colleagues in other offices, listen as your niece or nephew rapturously explains their finger painting, or laugh every time your friend’s cat walks across their keyboard.

We just needed something affordable, fast and simple. The Acer Chromebook has been the perfect fit for us. The first thing you should know is that Chromebooks operate with Google Chrome OS. I had never worked used the Google Chrome OS but so far I’m really liking it. It’s simple and you can install apps in the Chrome Web Store. You can’t install programs outside of the apps for Chrome but that has been fine for everything that we need and any docs or spreadsheets are done with Google Drive. I’ve actually pretty much switched over from Office to Google Drive because its free and does all the same functions that I need.

The 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution boasts impressive color and clarity. It is quite clear and I’m really impressed for the price point!

One thing that has taken me some getting used to with this laptop is the trackpad. I find that I have to click a lot harder than normal to select something compared to my work Macbook but it isn’t terrible.

20160501_105429I think this makes a great Mother’s Day gift idea because it’s a great all around laptop that is affordable. It has a built in HD webcam so it’s perfect for Skyping with family and friends. It also has a built-in media reader so mom can transfer all the family photos to it easily. Overall, it’s easy to use, the Chrome OS is simple, much like an android phone. If you need something that is for simple documents and web surfing or watching videos it’s great.

The Acer 15.6″ Chromebook Laptop is available on eBay for $219.99 with free shipping!
