Horse Movies and TV Shows on Netflix #StreamTeam
This post is part of my Netflix Stream Team ambassadorship. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not everyone knows this but years ago I owned and loved the most amazing horse. Having my own horse was a lifelong dream that I had and someday I hope to again. I loved to go to the barn and go for a ride and truly miss it but life with two beautiful kids and a full time job has a way of taking up all your time and being that we don’t live on land and my horse was boarded I didn’t have the time it takes to give my horse the attention he deserved.
So, I adopted him out to an amazing young girl and they went on to become great partners and winning lots of blue ribbons together. I felt good knowing he was adored and loved on daily and they kept me up to date with how he was doing until one day he took a bad step and broke a bone in his knee and went over the rainbow bridge. I miss him dearly…
Lately I’ve been thinking about getting back into riding lessons to help ease my itch to get back in the saddle and living vicariously via Netflix watching anything with horses. So, I thought it would be fun to share this little known fact about me and share with you some of my top picks for horse crazy gals and guys like myself.
Heartland (TV Series) – This has become my new favorite show! It’s a CBC television series and Netflix has seasons 1-6. This show is still on and season 9 will kick off soon. A multi-generational saga set in Alberta, Canada and centered on a family getting through life together in both happy and trying times. Amy is one of the main characters and works miracles with horses.
Dark Horse (1992) – I loved it when I was a kid. Allison, new in town, hates it and her new school. When she hangs with the wrong guy, and get into trouble, she is given community service at a horse stable. She comes to love being with the horses, until an auto accident cripples her and her favorite horse.
Black Beauty (1946) – Netflix has the 1946 version, I grew up with the 1987 version as my favorite but this one is pretty good too. Widower Squire Weldon (Charles Evans). trying to raise his motherless daughter, Anne (Mona Freeman) presents her with a colt, Black Beauty (Highland Dale), in the hope that by disciplining the horse, she may learn to discipline herself. Passing through Birtwick Farms, Bill Dixon (Richard Denning, a young American, arouses Anne’s interest when he expresses his hope of finding a “Very beautiful young colt” when he returns to England in two years. When he returns, however, his attitude brings Anne to the realization that she is still considered a “child.”
Storm Rider (2013) – When her father is put into jail, the spoiled teenager Dani loses everything. Forced to live with her uncle Sam on a farm without horses to ride and to train a sad Dani takes care of a young mule and learns what really counts.
Cowgirls and Angels (2012) – A group of rodeo trick-riders recruits a young girl to join them.
Second Chances (1998) – A little girl’s physical and emotional reawakening after an accident claims her father and her spirit.
The Greening of Whitney Brown (2011) – Whitney, a spoiled pre-teen from Philadelphia, is forced to move to the country when her parents feel the squeeze of economic hard times. A fish out of water, far from her comfort zone, she befriends an amazing horse, and undertakes a misguided journey back to her old life, only to discover that her family is her home.
Running Wild: The Life of Dayton O. Hyde (2013) – A documentary that chronicles a cowboy’s triumph in his quest to protect wild horses and the American West.
Buck (2011) – An examination of the life of acclaimed ‘horse whisperer’ Buck Brannaman, who recovered from years of child abuse to become a well-known expert in the interactions between horses and people.
Danny (1977) – A young girl’s special love for a horse helps them both.
