Family Fun in Crete
If you’ve got family holidays on the agenda this summer, you can’t go wrong with a family trip to Crete. This fantastic Greek island is a haven of diversity with stacks of things to see, do and experience for all ages.
As the largest of the Greek islands, Crete certainly knows how to keep the little ones entertained. Holidays to Crete offer plenty of coastal fun on its beaches, water parks and hotel kids’ clubs – of which there are more than a few to choose from. Many hotels in popular family resorts like Hersonissos, Rethymnon and Aghios Nikolaos offer fantastic on-site leisure facilities like swimming pools, slides and club activities for the little ones – a perfect way for mum and dad to relax while the kids drain some energy in a safe, stimulating environment.
Away from the hotel, Crete is full of surprises. There are stacks of festivals and carnivals taking place throughout Crete, such as the lively Penagia Festival in Mohos and the cheerful Sardine Festival. And in Malia, while you wouldn’t necessarily stay here with the kids (given its reputation as a lively club 18-30s hotspot) it’s still worth visiting its fantastic Minoan palace. Just 3km away from the town centre, the well-preserved ruins of this once-spectacular Royal building make for a great bit of adventure, and the perfect way to fire up the kids’ imaginations. There are also some superb remains of an ancient castle in Rethymnon, built hundreds of years ago to protect the town from pirates.
And of course when it comes to family holidays, there’s nothing quite like a day or two by the seaside. In Crete you’re really spoilt for choice, with lovely well-equipped beaches at all the main resorts and tempting shores to help you cool off. Many offer sunbeds and parasols, or you can just come prepared with beach towels and brollies and enjoy a day under cloudless blue skies, with the divine sounds of breaking waves and children’s tinkling laughter in your ears. Heaven.
