Back-To-School Lunch Options from Hormel Foods

School here is about to begin and while I don’t have any school age children yet I still have to contend with finding healthy, kid approved concoctions. Being a Hormel Food Blogger I get great Hormel food products to try out each month and this month there were some great options for back-to-school lunches.

Hormel Natural Deli Meats

My family and I love the Hormel Natural Choice Deli Sandwich Meats. There are two new varieties – cherrywood smoked ham and sundried tomato turkey. We tried out both of the new varieties and both we’re Pinky approved, which is no easy feat! I liked creating a simple wrap for her in a tortilla with low-fat mayo, though usually she takes a bite and then pulls it all apart and eats only the meat. That’s my Pinky! Anyhoo, the Hormel Natural Choice line has zero preservatives and no artificial colors or flavors so they are a great, healthy option for lunch! So, between the deli meats and the new REV wraps, the main course for lunch is covered!

Hormel Pepporoni Stix

We also received some Hormel pepperoni stix. These are great for on-the-go snacks or quickly popping in a lunchbox. They are tasty and have lots of protein. Each pepperoni stix is individually wrapped which makes me love them even more because it really speeds up the process of packing a lunch. They are a bit on the greasy side so I wouldn’t recommend it as a daily snack but it’s a nice once and a while yummy treat.

Here are some tips from Joan Hanson, director of the Hormel Foods Test Kitchen to ensure kids enjoy their lunch (and don’t trade them or throw them away!)

To keep your kids healthy, but still happy, combine taste and nutrition:
• Make It Unique: Mix up the classic sandwich by using a whole grain bagel or wheat tortilla as the bread. Pile on preservative-free Hormel® Natural Choice® Deli Ham with kid-friendly condiments.
• Keep It “Cool”: A small frozen water bottle in a colorful insulated lunch bag will keep food cool and give your child needed fluid to get through recess.
• Leave Some Love: Add a note from home or a colorful sticker to add some fun and love to your child’s lunch.

Hormel Compleats Microwave Meals

Now how about a little lunch for mom? I really loved the Hormel Compleats. I’m a big pasta fan so these are right up my alley. There are lots of varities to choose from as well including Macaroni and Cheese, Smoky Bacon Parmesan, Rigatoni, Creamy Cheese and Basil Tortellini, Three Cheese Chicken Pasta, Cheesy Ravioli and Italian Herb and Cheese Rigatoni. My favorite was the Smokey Bacon Parmesan. All you have to do is pop them in the microwave and BAM instant yummy pasta lunch!

 SPAM Meals

Lastly, we received a package of SPAM. I’ll be honest, I’ve never tried SPAM and before I never had any intentions to. I always had a preconceived notion of what SPAM was made of but I recently educated myself on what SPAM really is and these new SPAM meals make it look yummy and though I haven’t tried yet, I think I will!

I think these products would be great ideas for anyone’s snacks. I would love to try the sundried tomato turkey product. The pepperoni sticks look like they would be a quick after school solution to get your protein fix and maybe slow down any hunger pains until dinner.

The Compleats are really good and give them a hot lunch if they are able to heat them up. My kids are allowed to heat their food up if they need to.

That’s awesome they can heat their lunches up, that opens up a lot more possibilities for lunch ideas for you, Compleats being one of them :)
